Rule 5:
The Division Symbol - in a simple fraction tells the reader that the entire expression above the division symbol is the numerator and must be treated as if it were one number, and the entire expression below the division symbol is the denominator and must be treated as if it were one number.

Problem 8:
Simplify the fraction tex2html_wrap_inline18 .

Answer:
The numerator can be simplified to - 18 and the denominator can be simplified to - 9. The fraction tex2html_wrap_inline18 can be written as tex2html_wrap_inline22 which can be written as tex2html_wrap_inline24 . You can either answer the question by stating that the numerator is - 18 and the denominator is - 9 or you can state that the numerator is 2 and the denominator is 1 in the final version.
