Complex Fractions: Example 2

Rule 24:
To manipulate complex fractions, just convert them to simple fractions and follow rules 1 through 23 for simple fractions.

Example 2:
Convert tex2html_wrap_inline16 to a simple fraction and reduce.

Answer:

Solution 1:
The numerator tex2html_wrap_inline88 can be written tex2html_wrap_inline90 which in turn can be written tex2html_wrap_inline92

The denominator tex2html_wrap_inline94 can be written tex2html_wrap_inline18 which in turn can be written tex2html_wrap_inline98 .

The fraction can now be written tex2html_wrap_inline100 Multiply by 1 in the form of the complex fraction tex2html_wrap_inline102 .

Solution:2
Multiply the numerator by 1 in the form tex2html_wrap_inline106 , and multiply the denominator by 1 in the form tex2html_wrap_inline108 .
